about your speech pathologist

Dr Emma McLaughlin acknowledges the history that allows her the privilege of living on Taungurung Land.

Emma’s passion is supporting people with communication and/or swallowing needs to enjoy their life.

She has been a certified practicing speech pathologist working with adults for over 30 years.

Emma has worked in a wide range of contexts including acute care, rehabilitation, and community based services.

She has also worked as a Senior Advisor for Speech Pathology Australia.

She has taught at several universities, including Charles Sturt University, Central Queensland University, and La Trobe University, where she lectured in adult speech and swallowing for around 6 years.

Emma completed her PhD in 2008, in which she investigated why speech pathologists leave their jobs or the profession.

In 2016, Emma left academia to return to a clinical role. For about 5 years, she worked on the neurological, cancer, and pulmonary teams in the Community Rehabilitation Centre at Castlemaine (now Dhelkaya) Health in central Victoria.

She was also part of the COVID-19 pandemic response by testing/swabbing at a drive through testing site in Castlemaine.

Emma has co-authored peer reviewed papers covering topics such as helping people with speech and/or swallowing needs, and teaching speech pathology and occupational therapy students online.

Emma does casual academic work at La Trobe University Rural Health School in Bendigo, and occasional clinical work at Heathcote Health.
